Chris Armbruster was born in the American sector of Berlin. He studied at Bielefeld (1994, Diplom-Soziologe) and Lancaster (2002, PhD Sociology, funded by the ESRC). In the process of researching the history of the Soviet empire and of state socialism he spent time at UJ Kraków, ELTE Budapest, Uniwersytet Wrocławski and Novosibirsk State University (NGU). He is an alumnus of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and the Open Society Institute (HESP-Civic Education Project). His PhD thesis was titled: Explaining 1989: A reconstruction of historical research programmes on Soviet world power status, socialist states and their welfare regimes, nation-building in the Soviet-Russian imperial union, Soviet imperial relations of domination and communist ideology and party organisation and a comparative appraisal of their explanatory scope, reliability and reach.

Chris has been a Jean Monnet Fellow of the European Forum (2004-05) The Role of Universities in Innovation Systems in the 21st century at Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, European University Institute. He was also Fellow of the Fondazione Antonio Ruberti (2005-06) (as awarded by EIROforum - European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN); European Fusion Development Agreement (EFDA); European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL); European Space Agency (ESA); European Southern Observatory (ESO); European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF); Institut Laue–Langevin (ILL) and a Visiting Fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies.
