Elżbieta Matynia is the Director of the Transregional Center for Democratic Studies (TCDS) at The New School for Social Research, where she is also an associate professor in Sociology and Liberal Studies. In the last 16 years she developed and directed several international Institutes which provide an opportunity for rigorous comparative study and debate on the issues of democracy and democratization. Her research in political and cultural sociology focuses on democratic transitions in Eastern Europe and includes The Social Science in Transition: The Case of Central Europe (2002) Grappling with Democracy: Deliberations on Post-Communist Societies, 1990-1995. Her upcoming book is entitled Performative Democracy. Her essays on society, politics, and culture, appeared in books, and in were published in Social Research, Sociological Forum, East European Politics and Society, American Journal of Sociology, Current History, and Encuentro. She is a member of the Social Research, and of the East European Constitutional Review.
