1989: The Berlin Wall comes down and the borders open. As students and young professionals the post-1989 generation gains new trans-national experiences in Eastern and Western Europe. Spontaneous and self-organised, cultural exchange and joint education begins. From below, peace and liberty is fostered in Europe by a generation of trans-nationally mobile young people.
Since 1989 a new EastWest generation has emerged, enabled by a multitude of stipends and grant programmes to study, graduate and work in Europe. Of particular significance is that the stays abroad are longer and increasingly lead to (temporary) migration. This distinguishes the EastWest generation from the generation that participated in reconciliation and exchange programmes after World War II and also from those students today that are merely interested in the experience of a year abroad. Characteristic of the EastWest generation is that they are organised in trans-national associations and networks, which are committed to the European ideals of liberty, equality and solidarity.
